(Known) solutions:

Make an assistant (or virtual friend) for each student (or for each team of students) that monitor what goes on and gives sound advises for how to collaborate in e-learning. The assistant should keep track of what is going on in the student's virtual environment (assignments, news, messages, collaborative task progress etc.), and in this way support and strengthen the neccesary interdependencies between actors in collaborative telelearning environments.

The solution is either known workable solutions used in already implemented e-learning systems, or a solution from research (or combinations). The solution in this pattern is a solution resulted from research, but can also be spotted in some systems.

Research questions:

These research questions could be related to the field of CSCL, this particular topic and related to design patterns.

Context (and conditions):

This pattern is particular pertinent to situations where there are non or few face-to-face meetings, or in situations where there a loose relationships between the learners, and where the learners are considered novices in e-learning.

Here we try to describe a context and/or characteristics for situations where this pattern is particular suited. This is the element where you could also relate to other patterns. In this example I have merged the Context/Conditions elements because they are similar.

Discussion/consequences

This is a research pattern, and many of the consequenses are yet to be discovered. Interesting issues are who should own and be in control of the assistant? The instructor or student ? What kind of technology could be used ? Artificial Intelligence etc.

It is possible to discuss and give general or specific remarks in this element. Since this is a research pattern the discussion part deals with research issues.
